Designheads is a cute profile series featuring members of our community and their relationship to the world of design.

The future is interdisciplinary, is it not? More and more young creatives are dipping their toes into every discipline under the sun, seeing the value and fruit of a well-rounded creative identity. The best question to ask a creative person these days might not be “What do you do?” but rather “What is your purpose?” or “What themes do you explore?”

For Mexico City-based designhead Ana Melissa Olivares, fantasy, sensuality, and subversion thread through her wide portfolio of sculpture, video performance, painting, clothing design, styling, and more. Her work is united by softness with an edge — a lushness that belies a deep subconscious.

Read on to learn more about her work and what makes her a designhead…

Are you a designhead? What does that mean to you?

Yes, for me it would have to be someone with a lot of ideas running around in my head — I think of ideas as steaming and boiling. That's why I'm not surprised that my head feels swollen.

The last thing you made:

“Cádiz”, the last piece I made with clay. I think I'll take a break from that.

The next thing you want to make:

I'm making a clothing brand. It's called “secta”.

A design object you love:

Jaehun oh's lamps (check out his instagram)

jaehun oh

A design object you can't stand the sight of:

I don't know who it belongs to but that high heel chair hahaha

A moment of pure creative joy:

I love seeing what my friends do and how they enjoy doing what they like. The Beijing Olympics opening ceremony also blows my mind.

What does it mean to "design the future"?

I think for me it would be design whose qualities prioritize accessibility and simplicity. Use of resources to produce something compatible with what most of us want or need.

Words to live by:

“People aren't overcome by situations or outside forces. Defeat comes from within. No matter where you are, you're always a bit on your own, always an outsider. No matter what, I want to continue living with the awareness that I will die.” - Banana Yoshimoto

Your aesthetic embodied as a...

Song:

color: Lilac

texture: Candle wax

natural material: Clay

synthetic material: Resin

meme or tweet: Any video of Karina Torres, friend of losses.

Scent: baby oil

What's one design object that has your same energy?

Mmmm maybe some Valentina Cameranesi glass or vase.

Valentina Cameranesi

If you could show your work to anyone in the world, it would be:

Willem Dafoe

What's next for you?

More shows, more art and more fashion. I would like to make music with several friends, just for fun.
